Berlin Skate Spots: Parks and Street in One Day

Berlin's 119 mapped spots split 78 street, 19 park, 18 shop, the most even spread of any big city in our data. Here is how to session both in a day.

Berlin has 119 spots on our map: 78 street, 19 parks, 18 shops, three private spots and one DIY. Street accounts for 65% of the total. That is the lowest street share of any city we have mapped with more than 100 spots, and it is the whole reason this guide is organised the way it is. In most cities, planning a day means picking street spots and treating a park as the fallback. In Berlin you can genuinely plan around both.

The numbers, next to everyone else's

Here is what the same breakdown looks like elsewhere in our data. Paris: 378 street to 22 parks. San Francisco: 212 street to six parks, a 93% street share. Los Angeles: 426 to 30. Barcelona: 211 to nine. Amsterdam comes closest among the cities of comparable size at 100 street to 15 parks.

Two cities are proportionally more even than Berlin, and it is worth being straight about them: Rotterdam sits at 59% street, and Madrid at 66%. Rotterdam has 32 spots total and Madrid 71. Neither sample is large enough to plan a week around. Berlin is the only city past the 100-spot mark where parks and shops together make up nearly a third of the map.

The photo coverage backs the street half up. 111 of the 119 entries carry photos, and street spots alone account for 467 of them. Only one street spot in the whole set has none.

What a park day looks like

Nineteen parks, all named, all but one with photos, plus one DIY. They are not clustered in a single district, which is what makes a park-only day workable.

The heaviest documentation sits with Dog Shit Spot (DSS) at 22 photos, Vogelfreiheit at 20, Pappelplatz at 19, and then three at 16 each: T-Park in Prenzlauer Berg, MBU Skatepark on Weichselstraße in Neukölln, and Skatehalle Berlin on Revaler Straße.

Below that there is real variety in what the entries are. Gleidsdreieck bowls and Böcklerpark Skatepark are proper builds. Bocklerpark miniramp, Volkspark Mini, White Trash Ramp and August Bump are single-feature entries. Hasenheide, Forckenbeckplatz, Hertzbergplatz and Lohmühlenstrasse fill in the middle. G-Spot on Lilli-Henoch-Straße is the only entry flagged DIY.

Two parks sit well outside the centre and need their own trip: Freizeitpark Marienfelde is the southernmost spot in the entire Berlin set, and Steig Skatepark is the westernmost, more than 9 km from the nearest other spot in our Berlin data.

What a street day looks like

The street half of the map behaves like street in any other European capital: plazas, ledges, banks, a few gaps.

Kulturforum carries 50 photos, more than any other spot in Berlin. It also anchors a walkable run: National Gallery is 288 m away, and Filmhaus another 480 m past that. Three street spots, one short walk, no transit.

Around Breitscheidplatz in the west, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and Weltkugelbrunnen are 100 m apart, with Aquarium 304 m on from there.

Out east in the Wuhlheide there is a four-spot chain that most maps miss entirely: Gleiseck Ledge + Gap, then Down Rail at FEZ 128 m later, Haus Natur und Umwelt 227 m after that and FEZ 295 m beyond. It is a 40-minute ride from Mitte for four spots inside 700 m.

A word on rain, because it will come up. Six Berlin records carry an indoor flag, but four of them are shops, and a shop having a roof tells you nothing about where to skate. That leaves two covered street spots: Schneider Gap on Skalitzer Straße in Kreuzberg and Freie Universitat Berlin on the Arnimallee campus in Dahlem. Two is thin for a city with Berlin winters, and it puts us mid-table rather than ahead: Los Angeles has 11 covered spots that are not shops, Paris six, Amsterdam five, then Brussels, Seattle and Toronto on three each. Plan around the weather here, not around cover.

The other well-photographed street entries are Warschauer Strasse at 29 photos, Frankfurter Tor at 28, SSE on Landsberger Allee at 24, Polendenkmal at 23 and Cuvrystrasse at 16.

The sessions that only work here

This is the part the numbers were building towards. Five places in Berlin where a park and street spots are close enough to skate in one go, on foot.

Böcklerpark, Kreuzberg. Four entries inside a 500 m circle, two of them parks. Böcklerpark Skatepark and the miniramp are 139 m apart. The street spot Böcklerpark is 110 m from the miniramp, and Wassertorplatz is 493 m from the park. Skateshop 24 on Blücherstraße closes the loop at 681 m.

Revaler Straße, Friedrichshain. Skatehalle Berlin to Dog Shit Spot is 347 m, and Warschauer Strasse sits 191 m from DSS. O2 Platz is 491 m out. Two shops fall inside the same walk: Barrio at 179 m from the Skatehalle and Lassrollen at 571 m.

Gleisdreieck. Gleidsdreieck bowls with Tetris Blocks 149 m away, Park am Gleisdreieck (West) at 436 m, Yorckstrasse at 439 m and Möckernbrücke bank at 611 m. Bowls plus four street spots without leaving the park corridor.

Lohmühlen, on the Kreuzberg and Treptow border. White Trash Ramp and Lohmühlenstrasse are 149 m apart, with Spielplatz at 255 m, Görlitzer Ufer at 307 m and Cuvrystrasse at 368 m. Skateistan HQ is 330 m from Cuvrystrasse, though it is flagged private in our data, so treat it as a landmark rather than a session.

Volkspark Friedrichshain. Volkspark Mini sits 138 m from Filmtheater am Friedrichshain, 381 m from Polendenkmal and 543 m from Volkspark Bump.

Two smaller pairings are worth knowing. Forckenbeckplatz is 199 m from Blankensteinpark, and the G-Spot DIY is 362 m from Ernst Thalmann.

Eighteen shops says something

Eighteen shops on a 119-spot map is a higher share than Paris or Los Angeles, both of which have 27 shops across roughly four times the total spots. Berlin's are spread rather than stacked, which matters more than the raw count.

Mitte holds the densest group: Titus Berlin is 156 m from Alexanderplatz, and Civilist, Vans, Converse and Carhartt Berlin Mitte all sit within about 550 m of August Bump. In Friedrichshain, Blackriver Store is 46 m from the street spot Falafel. Kreuzberg has Search & Destroy on Oranienstraße and Ete Clothing. Out west there is Blue Tomato Berlin, Marshall, Titus Zoopreme on Meinekestraße and Carhartt Bikini Berlin, the last of which is 264 m from Aquarium. Funky Summer covers Wedding and Quad Roller covers Neukölln, 745 m from Hertzbergplatz.

A city keeps that many shops running in that many districts because people are skating in all of them.

Where our map is thin

Eight Berlin spots have no photo, and five of those are shops, so if you are checking whether somewhere still trades, the listing may be older than you want.

The indoor records have a hole in them. Not one of the 19 parks is flagged indoor, and neither is Skatehalle Berlin. Eight other cities in our data have at least one indoor park on the books, so read Berlin's zero as missing data rather than a missing building.

The bounding box spans about 30 km east to west, and the far ends are single entries rather than clusters: Spielplatz Rüstenallee on the eastern edge, Brunnen Lipschitzallee down in the south and Freie Universitat Berlin in Dahlem. Those are almost certainly undercounted districts rather than empty ones.

The full set is on the Berlin city page.
